He quickly packs up his essentials, the whole time mumbling, “They won’t get far enough; I WILL find them. Maybe that gamblin’ man’s a traveler but I know this area like the back of my hand. Rachel aughta know better than to pull something like this. She knows she’ll be sorry for even attempting such a foolish thing. When I get my hands on her…She’s gonna pay, dearly she will…”

He reaches into his pocket for the note his wife had left him. Though it was just five days ago, it’s already ragged from the countless times he has opened and read it.

Dear Henry,

You will believe what you want to believe. All I will say is that I’m off to a better life. The one and only decent thing about you is the fact that you love our daughter. I trust that you will take good care of her.

Rachel

He folds and tucks it back into the same pocket. He gives his head a quick shake and resumes his preparation.

Pulling the final rope that ties his knapsack to the saddle, a little too sharp in his anger, the horse jumps with nervousness. Henry sputters, “Don’t you be giving me a hard time too.” He mounts in a huff, turns the horse sharply, kicks him immediately into a hurried run, and heads west to Virginia City, Nevada.
