Prelim: Rachel, receives
an insightful message in a dream. No Going
Back, Chapter Six, Page 28 The dawn comes.
The faint glow of orange light draws Rachel out of her cozy bed. She still has a slight ache in her head, but she puts it
out of her mind. The beauty of this land, the early silhouettes, puts her in a state of awe. She sits just a few feet from
the water, feeling for the first time a lightness to her body; the feeling of freedom. I
could never go back to that life now. If Henry finds me I’d rather kill him then give in to him again. He must let Tess
and me go. She lies back, looking up as the world comes alive with the light of
day; enjoying the glorious feeling of the early sun on her face. Slowly, her mind clears and she drifts again into a calm
comfortable sleep. She dreams.
She is walking a trodden path. To the fore approaches an old woman. They stop and
the woman speaks first.“I travel alone. Can you show me the way north to Council Bluffs?” “I’m sorry but I’m on my way south to Oklahoma.” “I come from there. I’m going to Iowa to meet my great-granddaughter.” Something about this woman feels familiar. Rachel looks into her eyes; searching, wondering.
Could it be? She doesn’t know how to ask. She stands mesmerized, trying to find words. Finally, slowly, she speaks.
“I believe you once lived in Iowa, as did your daughter and your granddaughter. But your great-granddaughter does not.” “Listen to me, please. Show me the way to Iowa. We will find her there.”
